Fire on Haight St and Central Ave
December 11th, 2005 by DeWitt Clinton

A few handheld shots of the fire that gutted a building on Central Ave and Haight St in San Francisco on Friday, December 9th. I smelled the smoke and went up to the roof to take the first shot, then we put on shoes and walked over. The firefighters mostly had it under control by then and were moving people off the street. I want to make up some sort of press badge that I can wear when things like this happen… (Click on the picture for the full gallery.)

Gorgeous photo, and sad sight. My 6 year old prevented a serious fire in the nick of time at a friends house on Saturday night - and he had to be incredibly persistent to stop me from socializing and drag me into the empty room to show me the fire. At precisely that instant, it got bigger. And we put it out. No fire trucks needed. He now has a standing invitation to return to that friend’s party every year, forever. :-)

Wow — that’s terrifying! How did the fire start? How did you put it out?

Five minutes later it might have been terrifying. We caught it in the nick of time, and it was just a close call. Started with a candle sconce. I’ll tell you the rest of the story tomorrow. :-) About five other people sprung into action to put it out - and fast. More later…
