On Quitting Smoking, Part 2
July 17th, 2004 by DeWitt Clinton

Not that anyone cares or would find it relevant to their own life, but I’m now on day seven of quitting smoking. I’ve probably put on about ten pounds (tough to say because I don’t have a scale and actually have no idea what I weighed before anyway), but I’d almost be willing to attribute the weight gain to the fact that for the past week I’ve been basically living off of snacks out of the kitchen in the office. Between that and leaving work late and running move-related errands which keeps me from being active at all, it is hard to say whether the quitting smoking itself has greatly effected my metabolism.

In New York, if you didn’t take cabs or live right next to the subway, you’d easily find yourself walking 5 miles a day. While that doesn’t keep you in shape, it does help for a healthy metabolism. Out in California you have to set aside time to exercise. The nice thing is there are a million places to exercise. (I can’t wait until I move in, as my new place is only a block from Golden Gate Park.) But you have to be proactive about it, and I haven’t even had time to pick up a pair of running shoes since I got here.

Oh, the point was — I’m on day seven. Hell yeah. It only sucks about once every two hours now, which is a huge improvement over a few days ago. It helps a lot that I haven’t been around anyone who smokes or had a drink or anything in a week either. The combination of watching friends smoke and alcohol can ruin an attempt to quit. So it is good that I’ve been stuck down in Foster City (where?) all week and have been keeping to myself.

When I pull this off I expect mad props from everyone. Thanks.
