Server migration
Monday, February 11th, 2008

Users of either the OpenSearch interface to the Amazon catalog at aws.unto.net or the click-tracking bookmark manager at delancey.unto.net may experience a bit of inconsistent state while DNS changes propagate this morning. I moved those services from the virtual machine (hosted by the superstars at John Companies), to the newer instance that also hosts [...]

Not blog
Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Uh-oh.
Both del.icio.us and Twitter are down simultaneously.
How am I supposed to not blog without them?
(What I’m not blogging about.)

On Web 2.0, in Hebrew
Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

Eran Lahav wrote to tell me that he has translated one of my posts into Hebrew. (Hurray for Creative Commons!)
Here is the Hebrew version of “On Web 2.0.”
And here is the original English version.
Could one of my Israeli friends please give it a read and tell me how it sounds?

DeWitt@Mozes demo
Thursday, May 25th, 2006

My friends over at Mozes hooked me up, and you can now do something else neat with my name.
Use your cellphone and send a text message of “dewitt” to 66937.

XMPP, Google Talk, and Unto.net
Friday, May 19th, 2006

You can now IM me via Google Talk/Gmail via my own personal email address. Try it — add me (dewitt at unto dot net) as a contact in Gmail or Google Talk and invite me to chat.
When Google Talk launched I remember being impressed that they chose an open format as their protocol. [...]

Atom 1.0 Support
Saturday, May 13th, 2006

I have been hard at work try to get Unto.net to output a valid Atom 1.0 feed.
Wordpress 2.0 does not natively support Atom 1.0. Fortunately, there is a patch that can be applied to wp-atom.php to get you most of the way there. There were a few other changes I had to [...]

Little progress on the little machine
Friday, May 12th, 2006

Three days later and I have made only a small amount of progress writing a prototype for the little machine.
The first setback was a minor power blackout in my neighborhood. It was not even remotely as fun as the three-day blackout we had a few years ago in NYC. But it [...]

The Little Machine
Monday, May 8th, 2006

I spent the bulk of the past two weekends trying to migrate the contents of Unto.net’s WordPress blog into an installation of the MediaWiki wiki software.
For the most part I succeeded. Not that it was trivial. In order to migrate I had to do the following:

Export all of the old blog entries to a [...]

Unto.net Wordpress Upgrade
Saturday, April 29th, 2006

I upgraded from Wordpress 1.5.2 to Wordpress 2.0.2 this morning.
The servers that power unto.net have a relatively small amount of memory available. I had found that even a single request to WP would instantly balloon the resident memory up to 25MB from the 7MB baseline.
Since Wordpress 2.0 has caching built in I hoped that [...]

CSS Naked Day
Tuesday, April 4th, 2006

Oh, why not? No CSS for unto.net today… Oddly appealing, really.
What happened to the design?
To know more about why styles are disabled on this website visit the Annual CSS Naked Day website for more information.
