As noted on Slashdot, the FCC is considering allowing up to 1000 low-power radio stations to broadcast over the airwaves. According to the AP article on Yahoo, these 10 - 100 watt stations won’t interfere with the 100,000 watt commercial radio stations. While a few independent licenses do exist, they number in the hundreds — a small voice indeed compared to the 1,200 radio stations operated by Clear Channel. After years of being shut out by dubious psuedo-scientific arguments put forth to Congress by lobbyists hired by the National Association of Broadcasts, perhaps East Village Radio can now finally broadcast over something a bit more tangible than the internet.
