Channel 9 News is reporting that the people of San Antonio, TX took to the streets in protest today as the Federal Communications Commission came to town. The demonstrators carried signs and shouted slogans hoping to raise awareness of how Clear Channel Communication and other media conglomerates have a near monopoly hold on television and radio news outlets. Hundreds of people gathered in hopes of gaining an audience with the FCC, the govermental body responsible for regulating the concentration of power in the media industry. According to the article, the protesters chanted “tell me again, who do the airwaves belong to? The people!” Well, according to Federal law, this was once true, but it’s long since been auctioned off to the highest bidders. And it seems that some people want the airwaves back.
