File-trading lawsuits: America’s hottest new export
January 23rd, 2004 by DeWitt Clinton

The BBC reports on the likelihood of the adoption of RIAA-like tactics by the British Phonographic Industry, which recently stated it was "increasingly likely" that legal action would be taken against mp3 sharers. This announcement comes in the face of rising album sales in the UK (which reached a record high in 2003), going against the logic conventionally cited as motivating their American counterparts. This is interesting in light of earlier statements, as reported this past June, when a BPI spokesperson claimed in an interview with MIP Week (no longer readily available online), “It’s not our intention to start suing people. [...] suing people will be our last resort.”
