Search suggestions in Firefox
Saturday, May 27th, 2006

I notice that the milestone release of Firefox 2 has implemented a mechanism for “Google Suggest“-style auto-completions right in the browser’s search box. Very neat feature.
I haven’t pinged Gavin yet about whether or not this feature will be exposed in the new search plugin model. This document hints that it might be; [...]

Perl Cache 1.05
Friday, May 26th, 2006

I pushed out a new version of the venerable Cache::Cache module to CPAN and SourceForge. It may take an hour or two for the files to propagate to the mirrors. Just a few minor bugfixes in version 1.05, nothing to worry about if it already works for you.
I wrote the original module some [...]

I’m feeling A-Z
Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

I’m sure this has been done before.
But not by me. So…
Here are all 26 of the Google “I’m feeling lucky” links that you’ll get when you type a single letter into the Firefox URL bar:
“a” is for Apple, Inc..
“b” is for the Physical Review B Homepage.
“c” is for the C Programming Language (Wikipedia).
“d” is [...]

Sort of like Basecamp
Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Does anyone know of software that one can download and install that’s rather like Basecamp?
Basecamp is great — if you can host your data outside your network. But when you can’t, and you still want to be light and agile, what do you do?
Ideas?

Just type ‘f’
Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Firefox users, file this one under miscellaneous.
Type the letter “f”, and just the letter “f”, into the URL box and hit <return>.

Feeling lucky?

Update on the little machine
Sunday, May 21st, 2006

Bit by bit, progress was made on the demo/prototype for the little machine. The “little machine” is an experiment on how one could a) use Atom 1.0 files as a canonical store for content, b) offer read/write access via APP, c) build a real-time in-memory index of that content, d) surface that index via [...]

XMPP, Google Talk, and Unto.net
Friday, May 19th, 2006

You can now IM me via Google Talk/Gmail via my own personal email address. Try it — add me (dewitt at unto dot net) as a contact in Gmail or Google Talk and invite me to chat.
When Google Talk launched I remember being impressed that they chose an open format as their protocol. [...]

Help! I need a name!
Friday, May 19th, 2006

Who is feeling creative today?
I need a name for a new site. The name needs to be available on .com, .net, and .org and not trademarked or in common use.
The site is going to host a blog, a wiki, and a mailing list for search technology information.
I’ve been incredibly frustrated by the lack of [...]
