Night In Black
Friday, July 30th, 2004

I tried retouching the last set of photographs to compensate for the peculiar coloration, but wasn’t particularly satisfied with the results. However, since it was mostly an issue of saturation, I just dropped the set to greyscale instead. I’m much happier with the pictures this way…

Beach Pictures
Monday, July 26th, 2004

San Francisco isn’t that bad. I was able to spend a few hours shooting pictures at a little beach a few minutes away from my apartment. I used a Nikon D70 on these, but only had a 24-85 lens, which wasn’t really what I needed at all. And before you comment, the D70 (and that [...]

Best Commutes
Monday, July 26th, 2004

Given my new unhealthy obsession with commuting, I’m thinking of creating a web site called “bestcommutes.com” or something. Basically, people would be able to post their favourite routes and ways of getting from A to B.
The site wouldn’t need a particularly sophisticated interface or engine — it would simply contain the step by step [...]

On Tiered Message Delivery
Wednesday, July 21st, 2004

The thread on social networks and email got me thinking about the real future of email-like correspondence. My suspicion is that SMTP-based email won’t go away completely for a long while, but we will stop thinking of “email” as our primary message delivery mechanism.
Email has a number of advantages: It scales very well. It costs [...]

Social Networks And Email
Monday, July 19th, 2004

I had a bizarre dream last night. I’m sitting with some friends back in NYC at a bar and I started telling them excitedly about a new feature that Google had introduced to Gmail. This was the gist of it:
Gmail had added a link to the top of the page called “Friendsterizations”. When I had [...]

Wifi
Saturday, July 17th, 2004

One thing that is officially cool about San Francisco is the number of open Wifi spots. Someone with a 802.11 card wouldn’t even need a DSL or cable modem in half the neighborhoods around here. I’m sitting in a coffee shop just below my new apartment and there are three open wireless networks in range. [...]

On Quitting Smoking, Part 2
Saturday, July 17th, 2004

Not that anyone cares or would find it relevant to their own life, but I’m now on day seven of quitting smoking. I’ve probably put on about ten pounds (tough to say because I don’t have a scale and actually have no idea what I weighed before anyway), but I’d almost be willing to attribute [...]

Abu Ghraib
Friday, July 16th, 2004

As news is beginning to break worldwide (though not registering at all domestically, funny that) about how the United States has been not only torturing prisoners in Iraq, but torturing children in Iraq, I am trying to find the words to describe the situation.
Wait, I know this… They are on the tip of my [...]

George Bush and Marriage
Thursday, July 15th, 2004

Did you see what George Bush said after his pet project of getting an amendment to the US Constitution to ban gay marriage was shot down by the Senate?
Quote, “I am deeply disappointed that the effort to pass a constitutional amendment affirming the sanctity of marriage as being between a man and a woman was [...]

Buying a Car
Thursday, July 15th, 2004

One of downsides about moving out to California is the commute. Or more specifically, it is the need for a car. If I had found a place in another neighborhood then I’d be able to take Caltrain from San Francisco to Palo Alto. But as it is, I would have to spend about 35 [...]
